THIS BROADCAST WARNS SHIPS IN PASSAGE IN EAST AFRICA, THE INDIAN SUB CONTINENT AND SOUTH EAST ASIAN WATERS REGARDING PIRACY AND ARMED ROBBERY.

SOMALIA

HEAVILY ARMED PIRATES ARE NOW ATTACKING SHIPS FURTHER AWAY FROM THE COAST. SHIPS NOT MAKING SCHEDULED CALLS AT SOMALI PORTS ARE ADVISED TO KEEP AT LEAST 200 NM FROM THE SOMALI COAST.

ANY SHIPS SIGHTING ANY SUSPICIOUS BOATS / VESSELS / DHOWS DRIFTING OR ROAMING A RADIUS OF 50NM AROUND 01:00N - 049:00E, KINDLY NOTIFY THE IMB PIRACY REPORTING CENTRE IMMEDIATELY.

16 INCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED SINCE 05.06.2006. PIRATES ARE TARGETING SHIPS IN PORT AND ANCHORAGES. SHIPS ARE ADVISED TO TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS.

PART (II) RECENTLY REPORTED INCIDENTS

01.07.2007: 1942 LT: CHITTAGONG ANCHORAGE, BANGLADESH.

ABOUT 40 ROBBERS ARMED WITH LONG KNIVES AND STEEL BARS BOARDED A RO-RO SHIP AT ANCHOR. ALARM WAS RAISED, CREW MUSTERED AND CLOSED ALL ACCESS DOORS. MASTER FIRED ROCKET FLARES, PICKED UP ANCHOR AND PROCEED AT FULL SPEED TO THE OPEN SEA. CREW CAUGHT TWO ROBBERS AND THE OTHERS JUMPED OVERBOARD AND ESCAPED IN THEIR SPEED BOATS WITH SHIP'S STORES. PORT CONTROL AND COASTGUARD INFORMED. A COAST GUARD PATROL BOAT ARRIVED FOR INVESTIGATION AND TOOK THE TWO ROBBERS FOR INTERROGATION.

26.06.2007: 0700 LT: CHITTAGONG 'A' ANCHORAGE, BANGLADESH.

A CONTAINER SHIP AT ANCHOR DISCOVERED THAT HER AFT ROPE LOCKER WAS OPENED AND SHIP STORES MISSING. THE MASTER INFORMED THE COAST GUARD WHO ARRESTED THE PIRATE BOAT AND RETURNED THE STOLEN ITEMS TO THE SHIP.

25.06.2007: 1820 LT: POSN 01:51.5S - 105:02.8E, DEP. TANJUNG ULAR PORT, PALEMBANG, INDONESIA.

AROUND ELEVEN PIRATES, ARMED WITH LONG KNIVES AND SHOT GUNS BOARDED A TANKER UNDERWAY. ON SIGHTING THE PIRATES, CREW RAN INSIDE THE ACCOMMODATION AND CLOSED ALL DOORS. ON TAKING HEAD COUNT MASTER REALISED ONE OILER WAS BEING HELD HOSTAGE. MASTER CONTACTED THE SHORE AUTHORITIES. THE PIRATES OPENED FIRE BUT THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO CREW.  THE PIRATES ESCAPED IN A SMALL SPEED BOAT.  COAST GUARD ARRIVED TO INVESTIGATE. NO STORES MISSING. 

23.06.2007: 2145 LT: PULAU LIMA, KOTA TINGGI, MALAYSIA.

SIX ROBBERS ARMED WITH LONG KNIVES AND PISTOLS BOARDED A PRODUCT TANKER WHILE SHE WAS ALONGSIDE. ONE OF THE CREW WAS HIT ON THE HEAD WITH THE MACHETE. ANOTHER CREW MEMBER STOOD UP TO THE ROBBERS. IN THE STRUGGLE HE FELL OVERBOARD BUT MANAGED TO SWIM TO THE SHORE AND CONTACTED THE POLICE WITH ASSISTANCE FROM THE LOCAL FISHERMEN. THE ROBBERS SPENT AROUND 30 MINUTES RANSACKING AND ROBBING THE CREWS PERSONAL EFFECTS, BEFORE ESCAPING. THE INJURED CREW WERE SENT TO THE HOSPITAL.

23.06.2007: 0240 LT: POSN 03:41S - 114:26:40E, BANJARMASIN COAL LOADING ANCHORAGE, INDONESIA.

DUTY WATCHMAN, ON A BULK CARRIER, SIGHTED TWO ROBBERS CLIMBING UP THE ANCHOR CHAIN AND THREE OTHER PERSONS IN A BOAT CLOSE TO THE ANCHOR CABLE. WATCHMAN NOTIFIED D/O WHO RAISED THE ALARM. THE ROBBERS ABANDONED THEIR ATTEMPT TO BOARD AND ESCAPED IN THE WAITING SMALL BOAT.

13.06.2007: 0108 UTC: POSN 03:05N - 054:50E, SOMALIA.

THREE BOATS APPROACHED A TANKER ON CONVERGING COURSES. AS THE SHIP ALTERED HER COURSE THE BOATS ADJUSTED THEIR COURSE AND CONTINUED TO APPROACH THE SHIP. AS THE SHIP INCREASED SPEED THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BOATS AND SHIP INCREASED AND PREVENTED THE BOARDING OF THE SHIP.

10.06.2007: 0522 LT: POSN 06:00.6S - 106:53.2E, JAKARTA TANKER  ANCHORAGE, INDONESIA.

A FEW FISHING BOATS DIVERTED THE ATTENTION OF THE WATCHKEEPERS  WHILE TWO ROBBERS BOARDED A TANKER AT ANCHOR USING GRAPPLING HOOKS. THE ROBBERS STOLE TWO LIFERAFTS AND ESCAPED. PORT  AUTHORITIES INFORMED HOWEVER NO ACTION TAKEN.

24.05.2007: OFF MOGADISHU, SOMALIA.

PIRATES ATTACKED AND SEIZED A DHOW WITH 14 CREWMEMBERS. THE DHOW WAS HIJACKED AND TAKEN TO HARADHERE WHERE SHE WAS  ANCHORED UNTIL NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE OWNER WERE COMPLETED. THE DHOW WAS RELEASED ON THE 21 JUNE 2007.

17.05.2007: 0345 LT: CHITTAGONG 'A' ANCHORAGE, BANGLADESH.

THREE ROBBERS BOARDED A BULK CARRIER DURING LIGHTERING OPERATIONS. THEY OPENED THE AFT ROPE LOCKER AND STOLE SHIP'S STORES AND ESCAPED.  COAST GUARD INFORMED.

03.05.2007: 0430 LT: CHITTAGONG 'B' ANCHORAGE, BANGLADESH.

FIVE ROBBERS BOARDED A SHIP AND STOLE SHIP'S STORES. WHEN SPOTTED BY CREW, THEY JUMPED OVERBOARD AND ESCAPED.  MASTER REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO THE COAST GUARD WHO PROMPTLY RESPONDED AND RECOVERED THE STOLEN ITEMS AND RETURNED IT TO THE VESSEL.  THE ROBBERS WERE PROSECUTED.

SOMALIA.

VERBAL COMMUNICATION FROM THE TAIWAN FISHERIES DEPT CONFIRMS THAT A FISHING VESSEL HAS BEEN HIJACKED BY SOMALI PIRATES AND HELD AT HARADHERE. OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION FROM THE OWNERS IS AWAITED
