Newly Implemented Regulations in Turkish Straits

Below are the latest update for Turkish Straits passage regulations which is published on 18.04.2022 and will be in force starting on 15.05.2022.

The most important change is the tug escort requirement at Istanbul Strait for tankers over LOA 175m which was only applicable over 200m lenght so far and still no daylight restriction applies.

  • LPG vessels having LOA up to 150m. and over shall pass Turkish Straits using pilotage service.
  • LPG vessels having LOA 150m. and over shall pass Turkish Straits only during daylight using pilotage service and tug assistance.
  1. Vessels having LOA between 150m & 200m shall pass both straits with tug/s having min 60 tons bollard pull capacity.
  2. Vessels having LOA over 200m shall pass both straits with tug/s having min 90 tons bollard pull capacity.
  3. Depending on sea/weather conditions, number of tugs or their capacities might be increased.
  • Tankers having LOA 250m and over shall pass Canakkale Strait with pilot and tug escort during daylight*
  • Tankers having LOA 200m and over shall pass Istanbul Strait with pilot and tug escort during daylight.*
  • Tankers having LOA 175m and over shall pass Istanbul Strait with pilot and tug escort.*
  • Vessels having LOA 250m and over shall pass Istanbul Strait with tug escort with pilot and tug escort during daylight *

* Vessels refusing the tug escort will not be scheduled as per usual practice and to wait until VTS Center finds it safe to pass considering the current weather and sea conditions which will definitely cause long delays for the schedule.

Fixed tug escort fee is USD 6.000 for Istanbul Strait and USD 6.500 USD for Canakkale Strait for tankers over LOA 200m.

Tug escort fee at Istanbul Strait for tankers up to LOA 199,99m. is USD 4.000.

Please note that a revision is made on Istanbul Strait tug escort fees by Coastal Safety on 09.05.2022 as per below which will be in force starting on 15.05.2022:

Canakkale Strait tug escort fee for tankers has been increased to USD 7.000 as well.
