POTENTIAL LOSS OF VESSEL PROPULSION:
The U.S Coast Guard has released a Marine Safety Information Bulletin regarding the Gulf Menhaden seasonal event from May - October. Gulf Menhaden are a small filter-feeding fish. They range in size from 8 to 12 inches (2.5 cm), and live in nearshore waters. The fish become trapped in a ship's sea strainer causing issues such as reducing cooling, and high water/oil temperatures. Extreme cases have caused engine overheating or automatic shutdown.
The attached document gives recommended best practices as well as a questionnaire from the US Coast Guard.
