On 26 May 2025, a major fire broke out at the Esmeraldas Refinery, the largest oil refinery in Ecuador.
Local authorities have confirmed that the refinery fire has not affected port operations in Esmeraldas, including Balao. All terminals are operating without interruption, as the refinery is located separately from the port areas. There are no issues to report, and the ports continue to operate normally.
