We wish to provide advance notice regarding Protected Industrial Action (PIA) currently affecting stevedoring operations at the Port of Broome and the potential impact on upcoming vessel calls.
Kimberley Ports Authority (KPA) has advised that further protected industrial action has been notified, with rolling 24-hour work stoppages impacting stevedoring services at Terminal 1 from 5 August 2026 through to 22 August 2026 and Terminal 2 from 7 August 2026 through to 22 August 2026. Existing work bans, including restrictions on overtime and shift extensions, also remain in place.
Whilst KPA has sought exemptions for scheduled cruise vessel calls, we have been advised that these requests have been declined by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA). KPA has subsequently engaged legal representation and is seeking an expedited hearing in an attempt to obtain a stay of the protected industrial action for affected cruise vessels. A conciliation conference with the Fair Work Commission is scheduled for 12 August 2026.
KPA has confirmed that the Port of Broome remains open, with pilotage and towage services available. However, the availability of stevedoring & mooring services remains uncertain during the notified industrial action period. KPA has indicated a willingness to assist with alternative operational arrangements, including supporting cruise vessels operating from anchorage should this become necessary.
