Impact on Nautical Operations

Issue TypeCivil unrest
ImpactPartial Closure

Due to ongoing civil unrest, there are disruptions affecting the nautical chain in all Belgium ports.

At Fleet, we are currently experiencing operational impacts:

  • The tender swaths in Ostend are not operating.
  • The pilot station Wandelaar is operational, boat pilotage can be performed.
  • The SPN vessels in Ostend are not operating.
  • The pilot service in Vlissingen is not operating.
  • Pilot transport in Antwerp will not depart until 20:00 this evening.

Currently, 39 vessels are awaiting a pilot:

  • In Antwerp, there are 8 waiting vessels to leave the port.
  • In Zeebrugge, there are no waiting vessels to leave the port.
  • In Ghent, there are 6 waiting vessels to leave the port.
  • In the North Sea, 25 vessels are waiting, of which 18 are bound for Antwerp, 3 for Zeebrugge, and 4 for North Sea Port.

Additionally, 4 vessels are currently transiting with a Dutch pilot on board:

  • Antwerp: 2 outbound vessels and 2 inbound vessels.

The shift changes for the MRCC and the Joint Nautical Authority went smoothly this morning. At Vessel Traffic Services, there is minimal staffing of 3 people in the Zeebrugge Traffic Centre; they are monitoring vessel traffic reactively. The shift change at the other traffic centre proceeded normally.

MDK is making every effort to serve waiting vessels as efficiently as possible and to minimise delays. However, as part of the nautical chain, we remain dependent on coordination with our partners
