Panama Canal Launches ‘NetZero Slot’ for Green Vessels

The Panama Canal Authority (PCA) has introduced the NetZero Slot, a dedicated weekly transit slot for Neopanamax vessels that meet specific low-carbon requirements. This initiative aligns with the PCA’s commitment to decarbonisation and aims to support global shipping’s transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.

Key Details:

  • Starting Date: October 5, 2025
  • Vessel Type application: Neopanamax
  • Availability: One slot per week at the opening of Period 1A
  • Benefits:
    – Choice of transit date within the allocated week
    – Guaranteed 24-hour transit time
    – Just-In-Time (JIT) service included

Eligibility Requirements:

Phase 1 (Starting October 2025):

  • Vessels must be dual-fuel ready and capable of operating on at least one fuel with a well-to-wake (WtW) carbon intensity below 75 gCO2(e)/MJ.
  • Fuel compliance verified through supplier certification.

Phase 2 (Starting 2026):

  • Additional requirement: Vessels must submit a Technology Screening Report evaluating energy efficiency technologies.

Selection Criteria:

  • Cargo Condition: Priority given to laden vessels.
  • Capacity: Larger Panama Canal Universal Measurement System (PCUMS) capacity vessels receive preference.

The NetZero Slot is designed to reward investments in energy efficiency and low-carbon fuels, reinforcing the PCA’s efforts to promote sustainable maritime operations.
