Please note that a cyclone warning class 3 has been in force since 1610 hrs today, 26 February. The weather conditions have further deteriorated due to the cyclone’s approach, and swells of 1.5m are felt at the entrance beacons coupled with strong wind.

Vessels at berth having technical problems or under repairs are urged to ensure the adequate manning level at all times and run additional mooring lines for safety reasons.

Analysis of the latest satellite images indicates that Garance continues to intensify and may reach a tropical cyclone intensity in the coming hours.

At 1600 hours, severe tropical storm Garance was centered at about 440 km to the north-west of Mauritius, that is in latitude 17.6 degrees south and longitude 54.3 degrees east. It is moving towards the east at about 12 km/h.

The available numerical models are in agreement that the environmental conditions will remain favourable for its further intensification. Garance is expected to eventually recurve towards the south and will therefore start to dangerously approach Mauritius. Along this expected trajectory and due to its intensification and proximity to Mauritius, Garance constitutes a direct threat to the island.

A cyclone warning class III is in force in Mauritius.

The public is advised to maintain all precautions.

Cloud bands associated with Garance will influence Mauritius as from tonight. The weather will remain cloudy with showers, moderate to heavy at times together with isolated thunderstorms.

  2. Avoid places prone to water accumulation, river banks and other water courses which may be flooded and certain mountain slopes prone to landslide.
  3. Be very cautious on the roads due to reduced visibility resulting from heavy rains and fog patches.

Wind will blow from the north-east at a speed of about 25 km/h with gusts of the order of 70 km/h, strengthening as from early tomorrow morning.

Sea rough to very rough with swells. The public is advised not to venture at sea.
