Porto Alegre Port Administration has informed that dredging of the channel is commencing and is forecasted to be completed by early May. This will enable all vessels to navigate with the official maximum draft of 5.18 metres and a water level of 0.00 metres.

Due to the floods in the Porto Alegre area during 2024, the access channel has been silting with mud, which has affected the channel’s maximum draft.

Since December, regulations for water levels have been implemented. As per the table below, the official maximum draft of 5.18 metres remains unchanged. However, for vessels to pass with the mentioned draft, the water level must reach 1.20 metres.

Summary of the water level table:

Draft (metres)Required Water Level (metres)
5.18 m1.20 m
5.03 m1.00 m
4.83 m0.85 m
4.68 m0.70 m
4.48 m0.50 m
4.28 m0.30 m
4.18 m0.20 m
